VIDEO: Growhouse where an urban community meets farmings

The Growhouse is a tiny green house on Roosevelt and 6th Street where an urban community is bonding through farming. Greenhouse has been growing fresh vegetables for the community since 2008, where they use the front and backyard of the house to hold community plots.GrowhousePhoto

Each Sunday, the Growhouse holds volunteer days from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where anyone can attend to learn about plants, irrigation, sustainability and more. Volunteers can attend only one Sunday, or attend enough times to create their own plots and watch vegetables grow throughout the season.

The Growhouse is hoping that in the future they can gain enough to support to actually own the property and gain a land trust to ensure the program’s continuation. The Growhouse is not only an advocate for fresh food, but also for community gardens all across Phoenix.

Phoenix is a food dessert, so providing fresh vegetables is essential to the community’s overall health. Places like Growhouse and Downtown Sundown also help the community grow by connecting fresh-food vendors with consumers in a local space.
