Defining Leadership

“A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.”

— Lao Tzu

“The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant.”

— Max DePree

“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.”

— Warren Bennis

To me, a leader is the person who stands out in the crowd for being different, but when the time comes for recognition, they are the least likely to be recognized. This same person has the ability to inspire other people to believe in themselves or a cause to the extent that things get done.

In this class, I think leadership can be defined as the group of people who are entrusted with responsibility without abusing it. We are the class that people come to when they need a problem solved or when a need must be filled. We are the servants of our campus and community, while also being the faces of encouragement to those same people. As leaders and a Student Leadership we are the faces of our school, but we are also the working hands behind our fields of expertise.
